Every child experiences the world in their unique way, and understanding their sensory styles can unlock a world of connection and understanding for both parents and children alike.
Imagine a child who sees the world through vibrant colors and intricate details—a visual explorer who delights in the beauty of nature, art, and all things visual. For these children, providing a rich environment filled with stimulating visuals can ignite their imagination and creativity, whether it’s through colorful books, art supplies, or exploring the wonders of the great outdoors.
Then there are those little adventurers who are always on the move, craving the sensory input of touch and movement. These tactile learners thrive on hands-on experiences, whether it’s digging their hands into a bin of kinetic sand, building towers with blocks, or simply feeling the texture of different fabrics. For them, the world is a playground, and every surface is an opportunity for exploration and discovery.
But let’s not forget our auditory explorers, those children who are attuned to the soundscape around them. Whether it’s the melody of a favorite song, the rhythm of raindrops, or the chirping of birds outside, these children find joy and comfort in the auditory world. Providing opportunities for listening to music, storytelling, or simply enjoying the sounds of nature can nourish their auditory senses and foster a deep appreciation for the world of sound.
Last but not least, there are our little taste testers and smell detectives, who experience the world through the senses of taste and smell. For them, every meal is an adventure, every sniff a story waiting to be told. Exploring different flavors and aromas through cooking together, gardening, or even just taking a walk outside can awaken their senses and cultivate a lifelong love of food and nature.
In embracing and honoring these diverse sensory styles, parents can create environments that cater to their children’s unique needs and preferences, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of the rich tapestry of experiences that make up their world. After all, it’s through these sensory explorations that children learn, grow, and make sense of the world around them, one sensation at a time.
Introducing “Patchwork Portraits” NOW SHOWING at MoPA - from OCT 6 right up until NOV 30.
“Emotions and Well-being” is a hugely important component of the Early Years Learning Framework (“EYLF”); and it’s what MoPA’s brand new activities are all about. Every child that visits MoPA this month will be invited to use our craft templates and materials to develop their very own conceptual characters - and then to bring their creations to life using a range of powerfully emotive features.
Happy apples? Grumpy brushes too? Surprised Pops? Maybe... Maybe not. It’s entirely up to you :)
Our past character-building workshops have been HUGE - and we’re positive that “Patchwork Portraits” will be no exception. We can’t wait to see you all at your local MoPA this October!

Those who know MoPA well also know that we cap attendance numbers to all sessions, to keep the numbers at all our Museum’s at a super comfortable level — this ensures every visit is safe and comfy, but it also enables us to provide the richest possible learning experience… It ALSO means that most days sell out. That’s right! Monster Madness is BACK and it’s showing from Monday Sep 8 until Sunday Oct 5.
This SuPeR sCaRy (not!) puppet making activity has been a huge hit with our little learners; probably because it encourages children to streeeeetch their already incredible imaginations. It also happens to be a brilliant opportunity to work on those all-important problem solving and fine-motor skills - with lots of colouring, testing, changing, cutting and pasting.
All guests to all our Museums are invited to use the materials and media provided to dream up a unique monster-osity. And as always, all our activities are included in the ticket price. We can’t wait to see all your gorgeous creations!!
Make something super special for Dad (and all the important people in your life!) at MoPA this week. This gorgeous activation is available at all our Museum’s and runs right up until Fathers Day!! x
One of the most beautiful things about human existence is that every single one of us is different. To help celebrate what makes your children the unique creature they are, in the true spirit of book week, please join us from Aug 18 to Aug 31 to write and illustrate your very own “Book About Me” ❤️
